R&M is providing geotechnical investigations, surveying, planning, coastal, waterfront, civil and structural engineering, corrosion engineering, environmental and project management support for the first new terminal in the overall Anchorage Port Modernization Project, which will eventually replace all existing aging docks at the POA.

Designated as an “essential facility”, the PCT has very high seismic design standards and must be able to return to operation within one week following a major design level earthquake. The design team conducted detailed nonlinear evaluation of the piling and pile to deck connection and provided considerable analysis of soil to structure interaction. Soils improvements along the near shore area were incorporated into the design.

Designed to replace POL Terminal 1, which suffered significant structural damage during the November 2018 earthquake, the PCT must be completed before POL 1 fails or is demolished to ensure the Port maintains capacity to economically meet Alaska’s fuel and cement needs.

2020 PCT construction
2020 construction of the pile-supported dock located adjacent to ABI’s cement storage dome.
