Ship transportation within the Port of Nome is currently limited by existing depths in the outer basin of minus 22’, which is inadequate to accommodate vessels of drafts greater than about 18’. The Port of Nome Modification project will provide larger vessels improved access to Nome’s existing harbor by enlarging the outer basin and creating a new deep-water basin with a depth of minus 40’.

The R&M team provided geotechnical engineering, marine geophysical survey, topographic control survey and bathymetric survey services to support proposed dredging operations and breakwater construction. The marine geophysical and bathymetric survey is intended to provide sea-floor bathymetry, sub-bottom stratigraphy and submarine debris target information to support design of the proposed harbor modifications.

This project will provide larger vessels improved access to Nome’s existing harbor by enlarging the outer basin and creating a new deep-water basin with a depth of minus 40’.

Freeze-up of the harbor in November prior to completion of the survey necessitated a re-mobilization the following summer.
GPS base station provides positional control during data acquisition.
