Hydaburg Dam Site Survey

Client
Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium
Location
Hydaburg, Alaska

R&M performed a boundary and design survey in support of dam improvements. R&M used several methods of data collection, including GPS RTK, conventional, terrestrial laser scanner, a portable single beam sounder and an Unmanned Aerial System to collect aerial photography and LiDAR. R&M established a dam coordinate system that could be used for collecting dam data. The hydrographic survey was performed using a Hydrolight-TM single beam Echo Sounder with RTK horizontal positioning mounted to a raft. R&M produced an above and below water survey to determine reservoir capacity, support replacement of a historic dam and refurbishment of the intake structure.

The 8′ dam is at risk of failing and knocking out the City of Hydaburg’s water supply. This survey determined reservoir capacity, and replacement of the dam and refurbishment of the intake structure.

Secondary control set in the pond above the dam.
Secondary control set below the dam in the outflow creek for the 3D scanner.
