Emmonak Floodplain Mapping

R&M performed cross sections of a 20-mile section of the Yukon River bottom between Emmonak and Nunam Iqua using a HydroLite-TM sonar with RTK for horizontal positioning. We analyzed data sets each night, and shots that were identified as statistical outliers, possibly due to returns from underwater debris rather than the actual river bottom, were removed. The Yukon River is loaded with sediment and debris, and many areas are inaccessible by boat. When the crew came to a shallow sand bar the boat could not cross, they collected data on foot. The team collected data at the toe and top of the bank at each cross section to give a complete cross-sectional data set.

Floodplain mapping assists the USACE in their efforts to help communities prevent floods where possible, and significantly reduce the loss of lives and the economic and environmental impacts when they do occur.
