R&M characterized the nature and extent of PFAS contamination in groundwater beneath the Fairbanks International Airport, as well as surrounding areas downgradient. The goal was to roughly delineate the horizontal extent of PFAS contamination and obtain a limited vertical cross-section to understand vertical migration.

R&M coordinated utility locates and drilling within the active airport without disrupting air traffic or increasing the budget. We performed a two-phase investigation to provide more efficient data collection by deleting unnecessary drilling locations. The investigation resulted in a more complete characterization than possible with a single drilling phase and was completed within the same budget.

PFAS migration impacted private water wells in the vicinity of the airport. Our work roughly delineated the horizontal extent of the contamination and allowed DOT&PF to further identify specific contamination.

Soil core prepared for field screening and sample collection to determine if adjacent contaminated sites are impacting the project area.
Groundwater sample collecting using a GeoProbe-installed temporary monitoring well to delineate and characterize groundwater conditions.
