Cold Bay Geotechnical and Environmental Investigation, Design and Construction Support

R&M is providing environmental support to address the abandoned World War II-era Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) building which needs to be removed to address safety concerns. Efforts included a Phase I ESA, HMA and a Phase II ESA to investigate contamination in soil and groundwater to guide design and construction/bid services. Construction documents integrated the investigation findings to limit contaminated soil disturbance, while allowing relatively standard construction practices. Innovative design elements included preserving large portions of the existing foundation and raising site grade to prevent disturbance of contaminated soil. R&M is currently providing QEP field monitoring services during demolition and construction activities.

The demolition of this World War II-era ARFF building made room for construction of a new snow removal equipment and chemical storage building to better serve the Cold Bay Airport.
