R&M performed design and right of way surveys and collected aerial imagery and LiDAR via UAS to support engineering design of a realignment of 15 miles of the Sterling Highway. Field surveys included establishing horizontal and vertical control, one foot contour topography, planimetrics, utilities and hydrology surveys. This project demonstrates R&M’s ability to provide innovative solutions to complex surveys to decrease costs and increase the amount of data available for engineering design. The use of UAS allowed our team to efficiently acquire accurate data that would be incredibly costly using other means.

This project will increase capacity and safety by widening shoulders, bringing the roadway curves into compliance with design speeds, and adding passing lanes, pathways and wildlife crossings.

Single-beam hydrographic survey in the Kenai River.
Horizontal control survey along the road corridor.
