Nome Sea Storm Permanent Repairs: Nome-Council Road MP 14-32

Client
Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities
Location
Nome, Alaska

This segment of road, which has existed for over 100 years along a windswept spit between Safety Sound and the Bering Sea, is particularly susceptible to storm damage. Efforts to protect or move the road have been hampered because the ROW limits had never been clearly defined. R&M used historic documents and aerial photography to determine the location of the road at or near statehood with ROW limits determined as an offset from that alignment. Deliverables included a Record of Survey that documented modern field survey information and the location of the ROW corridor in relation to where the road existed in 2013.

Documenting the ROW corridor provided DOT&PF with the information needed to rebuild and/or realign the Nome-Council Road and install erosion control features within the ROW. R&M resolved a long-standing problem by establishing the ROW using historic documentation and aerial photography.
