Commuting by bicycle not only promotes individual health and wellness, but also benefits our community. Fewer vehicles on the road means less congestion, noise and pollution.
R&M is doing our part to better our community by promoting bike commuting through participation in internal and local commuter challenges. Participating also offers a fun intra-office competition.

R&M Summer Commuter Bike Challenge
R&M hosted our first internal commuter bike challenge this past summer.
The challenge period ran from May 1 – August 31. Challengers that biked more than 10 times to and from work within that time period won prizes, including bike items and gift cards.
Eight R&Mers participated, logging a total of 3,575.7 miles over the summer months. Senior Geotechnical Engineer Bob Pintner, PE dominated the challenge with a high of 944 miles consisting of 59 commuter rides.
“Biking to work is satisfying on many levels. The slower pace of riding allows more time to appreciate the sun rising over the mountains and the changing seasons. My ride takes me along the Campbell Creek Trail, where in addition to moose and other common animals, I have seen owls, foxes, beavers and swans. With a 16-mile round trip I can skip the gym, eat dessert without guilt, and feel good about doing a small part in reducing traffic and global warming.”Bob Pintner, PE – Senior Geotechnical Engineer
September Workplace Challenge
To finish off the summer bike season, R&M also participated in the September Workplace Challenge, hosted by Bike Anchorage.
The challenge encouraged participants to commute using multi-modal transportation, such as biking, walking, carpool or public transit commute. Workplaces were awarded points for each commute trip and prizes were awarded to the top large, medium and small workplaces with the most trips logged.
R&M ended the challenge in 14th place out of 53 teams, logging a total of 489.9 miles. Bob Pinter once again led team R&M with 14 rides logged throughout the month.
The challenge ran from September 1-28, culminating in an awards gala on September 29th to recognize the top workplaces and individuals.
