Nenana Little Goldstream Bridge Replacement

Client
Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities
Location
Nenana, Alaska
Construction Value
$940,000

R&M designed a bottomless arch culvert with aluminum headwalls and wingwalls to replace the aging, scour-critical Little Goldstream Creek Bridge. The crossing is located on a fish stream near Nenana. The bottomless arch concept was selected based on an alternatives analysis that developed 35% designs and cost estimates for three alternatives. The unusual bottomless arch structure best addressed difficult construction conditions and poor foundation soils at the site, which consisted of frozen silts. R&M performed a site visit, developed a flood frequency analysis, and assembled a hydraulic model to aid in the design of the culvert and associated erosion protection.

Replacement of the Little Goldstream Creek Bridge ensures continued access to nearby rural residences and agricultural lands.

Installation of sheet pile wall foundation for the bottomless arch culvert. This type of foundation was used to address fine-grained frozen soils at the site.
