C Street Extension – Dimond Boulevard to O’Malley Road

Client
Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities
Location
Anchorage, Alaska
Construction Value
$34.5 million

R&M was responsible for preliminary engineering, final design and assistance during construction for 1.5 miles of divided four-lane arterial in South Anchorage. The extension converted an at-grade intersection to a grade-separated freeway interchange, featuring a pair of multi-lane roundabouts. These were the first roundabouts in Alaska designed specifically for large trucks such as the “Alaska Legal Combination”. R&M led an extensive public involvement effort (including a truck rodeo) to inform and accommodate the trucking community, especially a material source company located nearby. These roundabouts were the first in the state to employ high speed approach treatments.

Initially designed as a signalized interchange, R&M redesigned the interchange during construction as the benefits of roundabouts emerged. In service for more than 15 years, they continue to perform as designed, even with retail growth along the corridor.
