Cody Gibson, LSIT, CMS, Remote Sensing Specialist at R&M, recently earned his Certified Mapping Scientist – Remote Sensing (CMS) certification through the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), the Imaging and Geospatial Information Society. The certification recognizes Cody’s advanced expertise in remote sensing and mapping, further enhancing R&M’s ability to deliver accurate, high-quality geospatial data for clients throughout Alaska.
The CMS-RS credential is awarded to professionals who meet rigorous standards of education, experience and ethical practice, and who demonstrate advanced knowledge in remote sensing principles, image interpretation and data processing.
“Earning this certification feels like a full-circle moment for me. What started years ago in the Geomatics program at UAA eventually took me across the world to complete my master’s degree in Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics in Germany, and continued through countless projects, long processing days, field deployments and learning curves along the way. This certification helps validate the time spent building skills, making mistakes, figuring things out and slowly getting better at the craft. It gives me confidence that the work I’ve put in has real weight behind it and allows me to step forward in my career with stronger credibility when taking on more complex projects.” – Cody Gibson, LSIT, CMS
Cody joined R&M in 2022 and brings 12 years of experience in land and hydrographic surveying. He has supported a wide range of projects involving LiDAR, bathymetric mapping and drone-based data collection, including work for the Hoonah Airport Survey, Alaska Railroad Corporation Hurricane Bridge Rehabilitation and Port Mackenzie Hydrographic Survey projects. His expertise supports R&M’s Geomatics Department in delivering cutting-edge mapping and spatial analysis solutions for transportation, infrastructure and environmental projects statewide.
Cody specializes in offshore navigation and positioning, UAS surveys, geophysical and geotechnical surveying, and the installation and monitoring of high-precision positioning systems. He is experienced in survey vessel mobilization and demobilization, managing logistics and operations for both large and small survey platforms. Cody has also maintained and overseen survey control systems in support of hydrographic and navigation operations in Alaska, the U.S. West Coast, Australia and other offshore locations.
“What I love most about remote sensing is that no two projects ever feel the same. One week I might be working with aircraft-collected data, another week flying drones, processing mobile mapping or working with underwater and subsea positioning systems. That variety is what keeps the work exciting. I enjoy being part of projects that start in the field and end with a finished product people rely on to make decisions. At R&M, one of the most rewarding parts of the job for me has been working directly with clients — helping translate complex technical processes into something understandable and useful, and delivering products that exceed expectations.” – Cody Gibson, LSIT, CMS
Cody holds a B.S. in Geomatics from the University of Alaska Anchorage and an M.S. in Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics from the University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart, Germany. He is a Land Surveyor in Training and FAA Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot. Cody also holds certifications in OSHA-10, BOSEIT/HUET, cold water survival, offshore medical and first aid/CPR. Outside of work, Cody enjoys hiking, biking, fishing, traveling and photography.
