The second open house for the Big Lake Pedestrian Improvements Study will take place Thursday, October 12 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the Big Lake Community Recreation Center.
During the open house, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) and R&M will present the draft recommendations for improving pedestrian safety in Big Lake. The recommendations will also be posted to the website after the meeting.
This study will identify and plan for pedestrian and other non-motorized user safety on Big Lake Road. Big Lake is a growing community within the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. As the area grows, it will be important for the community to accommodate future economic growth and development, while maintaining walkability and pedestrian safety along Big Lake Road, which is developing into the town center and commercial core of the community.
R&M is supporting DOT&PF with planning, public involvement and engineering services. Efforts include analyzing current conditions and recommending solutions, including prioritizing capital projects that enhance safety for non-motorized users to support walkability and economic development. In addition to planning and executing project open houses, R&M is facilitating a steering committee of Big Lake residents, business owners and community council members to ensure the study’s recommendations reflect the local context, are community supported and meet the realities of implementation.
