In A Nutshell

R&M is looking for a team-oriented project geotechnical engineer to perform field investigations, engineering design and reporting aspects of geotechnical projects. Tasks will include report writing, geotechnical data collection and analysis, geotechnical engineering and evaluations, and preparing engineering recommendations.

This is an on-site position, with occasional travel to projects sites throughout Alaska.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate and represent R&M in professional organizations and community activities.

The project geotechnical engineer will report to the Geosciences Group Manager. Project work may also be supervised by other senior staff, depending on project team structure.

On Any Given Day

On a typical day, the project geotechnical engineer will support geotechnical or geology projects and coordinate with concurrent environmental permitting and contaminated site investigation projects by:

  • Interacting, communicating and collaborating with other R&M staff.
  • Performing field explorations, collecting soil/rock samples, and performing geologic reconnaissance and mapping.
  • Performing geotechnical engineering analysis, feasibility studies and calculations.
  • Providing geotechnical recommendations.
  • Peer reviewing engineering calculations and technical reports.

Typical work duties will be a mix of field and office work, depending on current project needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil, Geotechnical or Geological Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Alaska Professional Civil Engineer license (or able to achieve through reciprocity within six months of hire).

Applicants should also be able to demonstrate:

  • Understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and practices in soil mechanics, foundations and earthworks in civil projects.
  • Understanding of cold-regions engineering, including frozen ground, and Alaska geology.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal design standards related to geotechnical engineering.
  • Experience in geotechnical analysis software and ESRI GIS mapping.

All candidates should have strong written and verbal communication skills. Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds and have a valid Alaska driver’s license.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering
  • Experience in AutoCAD
