Construction continues to make significant progress on the Sterling Highway MP 45-60 Project in Cooper Landing, including a major milestone for the Juneau Creek Bridge.
The bridge recently reached the opposite side of the canyon after being assembled on site and launched as a single 8-million-pound structure. Moving at approximately 20′ feet’ per hour during the launch process, the bridge represents an impressive feat of engineering and a significant step forward for the project.

R&M is the designer for Stage 1B, the easternmost segment of the Sterling Highway MP 45-60 Project. Currently under construction between Mileposts 45 and 47, this phase includes reconstruction of approximately two miles of the Sterling Highway, improvements at the Quartz Creek intersection and construction of a new intersection that will become the primary access into Cooper Landing. Additional improvements include the Coyote Notch pedestrian undercrossing, two miles of separated pathway, retaining walls, drainage infrastructure, culvert upgrades, guardrail, pavement, signage and striping. Crews are currently completing major earthwork, utility relocation and temporary detour construction activities.
As part of the Stage 1B design, R&M provided surveying and mapping, geotechnical engineering, hydrology and hydraulic design, permitting support, utility coordination, right of way support, public involvement support and construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) support. The team also worked closely with project partners to optimize the highway alignment, manage excavation quantities and coordinate utility relocations to support efficient construction.
The Juneau Creek Bridge was designed by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Bridge Section and is a key component of the overall Sterling Highway MP 45-60 Project, which will improve safety, traffic flow and roadway reliability through Cooper Landing while supporting long-term transportation improvements for the Kenai Peninsula.
Congratulations to DOT&PF, the DOT&PF Bridge Section and the entire project team on reaching this exciting milestone.
