Two former R&M interns recently joined the R&M CONSULTANTS, INC. (R&M) team as full-time Staff Engineers.

James Colles, EIT and Tyler Shamburg joined R&M’s Construction Administration (CA) Department in May 2016 as Staff Engineers. They provide construction oversight and administration support for airport, highway and waterfront improvements, as well as structural vertical and industrial construction projects.

James previously worked with R&M as an intern in our materials laboratory for the past two summers before being hired full-time after graduation from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. As an intern, he provided materials testing and special inspections on road, airport, harbor and other facility projects. Since joining R&M full-time, James has been working on the Hydaburg Pavement Rehabilitation on Prince of Wales Island. He is responsible for keeping track of materials testing requirements and ensuring the required tests are conducted and results submitted to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.

“I decided to work full time with R&M because they are focused on building Alaska. I love this state and plan on never moving away. I’m looking forward to being a part of future Alaskan construction projects.”

James moved to Alaska in 2006 when his father was stationed at Elmendorf Airforce Base. After his father retired, his family loved Alaska so much they decided to stay. James enjoys spending his time outdoors. He cross country skis and snowboards in the winter, and hikes, hunts and fishes in the summers.

Tyler previously worked as an intern in our CA Department before being hired full-time after graduating from Northern Arizona University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. As an intern, he provided grade inspections on the Dalton Highway MP 401-414 Reconstruction project. Since joining R&M full-time, Tyler has continued working on the Dalton Highway Reconstruction, with his responsibilities expanded to include inspection of insulation installation, and construction of culverts and water pipes.

“I wanted to give my services back to the place I grew up and R&M’s company vision and mission matched what I would like to do for the state. I also really like the way R&M cares about its employees and how it feels just like Anchorage – big city, small town feel.”

Tyler Shamburg – Staff Engineer

Tyler moved to Alaska at an age young enough that all his memories are here. He briefly left to attend college, but it was never meant to be a permanent move; just an excuse to live in warmer weather while getting his education. He enjoys outdoor winter activities, including skiing, snowboarding, snowmachining and playing hockey, and likes to read and watch movies when not outdoors.
