Communities thrive when young people have safe places to grow, learn and connect. Across Anchorage, local organizations are working to create opportunities for kids and families that go beyond sports, offering mentorship, reflection and hope. R&M has played a supporting role in these efforts by providing pro bono design services and financial contributions that help turn visions into reality.

A New Home for Youth Sports and Mentorship

In Anchorage’s Mountain View neighborhood, the Gamers/RBI Alaska Indoor Baseball Facility is taking shape as a game-changing resource for local youth. Many kids in Alaska face barriers to participating in baseball and softball due to high costs, lack of indoor space and long winters. This year-round training center provides affordable access to baseball and softball programs, mentorship and academic support, creating new opportunities for kids who might not otherwise have the chance to play.

Beyond the sport itself, the facility is designed to be a hub for growth and community connection. It offers a place where young athletes can develop discipline, teamwork and confidence — skills that will serve them on and off the field.

To help bring this vision forward, R&M contributed engineering and planning services valued at $50,000, including site design, geotechnical investigations, drainage and stormwater planning, and foundation recommendations. The firm also raised funds through its charity golf tournament to further support RBI Alaska’s mission.

Honoring a Legacy at Abbott O Rabbit

In South Anchorage, another project shows how sport can also serve as a space for remembrance and healing. At Abbott-O-Rabbit Little League’s Edwards Field, a new memorial bench honors the life of Sladen Mohl, a beloved player whose spirit continues to inspire teammates and families.

The bench, envisioned by Sladen’s friends and supported by volunteers and R&M’s design expertise, sits behind home plate, looking out over the field where so many memories were made. It offers a quiet place for reflection, a reminder to cherish time with loved ones and to celebrate the bonds that baseball fosters.

Why It Matters

Together, these projects highlight the power of community-driven initiatives to create lasting impact. The indoor training facility will open doors for underserved youth, while the memorial bench will provide a space of peace and remembrance for generations to come.

R&M’s role in these efforts reflects a broader commitment to improving Alaskan communities — not only through the projects we design, but also by supporting causes important to our employees and neighbors, from youth sports and education to wellness and trails. By investing our time, expertise and resources, we help build stronger, healthier and more connected communities.
