In A Nutshell

R&M is looking for a team-oriented staff civil engineer to support our Utilities Group.

As a member of the R&M team, the Staff Civil Engineer will participate in the planning and design of sanitation and utilities projects. Tasks include designing utility infrastructure, writing engineering reports, performing engineering calculations, and making recommendations for solutions to engineering challenges throughout Alaska. Other responsibilities include preparing drawings, specifications and construction bid document packages. This role requires periodic travel to rural Alaska for project site visits and hands-on inspection and testing of utility infrastructure. During construction, this role will provide technical support, submittal reviews and milestone site inspections summarized in written reports.

This is an on-site position in Anchorage with occasional field work. 

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate and represent R&M in professional organizations and community activities.

The Staff Civil Engineer will receive guidance from the Utilities Group Manager and will report directly to a Senior Project Engineer with the opportunity to support other civil engineering group disciplines.

On Any Given Day

On a typical day, the Staff Civil Engineer will:

  • Contribute to project development and proactively collaborate with other members of R&M’s multi-discipline engineering team.
  • Work with the Senior Project Engineer to resolve technical challenges, while advancing project design development and delivery to the client.
  • Prepare quality engineering drawings, specifications, calculations and construction cost estimates.
  • Assist with assessing existing utility infrastructure, documenting deficiencies and providing improvement recommendations.
  • Assist in preparing engineering reports and permit applications in support of agency plan review and construction permitting.
  • Review technical reports prepared by other engineering disciplines with identification of key concepts for incorporation into the project design.
  • Attend project meetings with clients, prepare meeting notes and memoranda.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a B.S. in Civil Engineering. The successful candidate will have an EIT certificate or be able to obtain within six months of hire. Prior engineering work experience or internship in the areas of general civil engineering is preferable. Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D is desirable, as well as basic skills in Microsoft Word and Excel. All candidates should have good interpersonal abilities for working in a team environment, and strong written and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate will be collaborative, self-motivated and detail oriented.
