In A Nutshell

R&M is looking for a team-oriented staff civil engineer to join our Surface Transportation Group. Recent and ongoing projects include the Sterling Highway MP 45-60 Reconstruction – Phase 1B, Nome Center Creek Road Rehabilitation, Seward Hwy/Alyeska Highway Intersection Improvements, Fairview Loop Road Rehabilitation, Skagway State Street Rehabilitation and Kodiak ADA Improvements, Segment 5, Rezanof Drive.

The staff civil engineer will participate in the planning, design and development of transportation infrastructure projects throughout Alaska. Tasks include preconstruction site visits, writing engineering reports, designing and modeling roadways, developing alternative design solutions, providing recommendations to unique project challenges, creating engineering drawings, performing engineering calculations, preparing engineer’s estimates and assembling those elements into construction bid document packages. Other responsibilities include performing site visits during construction, submittal/shop drawing reviews, and reporting.

This is an on-site position, with occasional travel to rural Alaska project sites.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate and represent R&M in professional organizations and community activities.

The Staff Civil Engineer will receive guidance from the Surface Transportation Group Manager and will report directly to a Senior Project Engineer or Project Engineer on a day-to-day basis, depending on project assignments. The Staff Civil Engineer may also have the opportunity to support other groups within R&M’s Engineering Department.

On Any Given Day

On a typical day, the Staff Civil Engineer will:

  • Contribute to project development and proactively collaborate with other members of R&M’s multi-discipline engineering team.
  • Work with project engineers and senior project engineers to resolve technical challenges, while advancing project design development.
  • Prepare technical figures, graphics and renderings to support design team members, permitting agencies, stakeholders and clients while advancing project development.
  • Prepare quality engineering drawings, specifications, calculations and construction cost estimates.
  • Review engineering drawings, technical reports and calculations prepared by design team members for correctness and accuracy.
  • Attend project meetings with clients.
  • Prepare meeting notes and memoranda.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Must have an EIT certificate or be able to obtain within six months of hire. Prior engineering work experience or internship in the areas of general civil engineering, with an emphasis on surface transportation design is preferable. Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D is desirable, as well as basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Project. All candidates should have good interpersonal abilities for working in a team environment, strong written and verbal communication skills, and critical thinking skills. The successful candidate will be motivated, detail-oriented and willing to learn.
