In A Nutshell

R&M is looking for a team-oriented staff civil engineer to join our growing Airport Engineering Group. Recent and ongoing airport engineering projects include the Newtok Airport Relocation, Bethel Airport Main Runway Reconstruction, Nanwalek-Port Graham Airport Relocation, Nome Airport Rehabilitation, Kotzebue Airport Runway Settlement Repair and many others.

The staff civil engineer will assist with planning and design of civil engineering projects, with an emphasis in analysis and design tasks for airport and other civil engineering-related work. Project tasks may include site investigations, evaluation, planning, studies, feasibility reports, preliminary engineering, design development, specification writing, construction document preparation and construction phase support services.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate and represent R&M in professional organizations and community activities.

The Staff Civil Engineer will report to the Airport Engineering Group Manager, and to Senior Project Engineers and/or Project Engineers on day-to-day basis, based on team organization for specific projects.

On Any Given Day

  • Work on several projects simultaneously and proactively collaborate with other team members to advance project design and delivery.
  • Resolve technical challenges and brainstorm in group settings.
  • Develop airport and roadway designs using advanced 3D design software in accordance with client and industry standards.
  • Create technically accurate, quality engineering drawings, specifications and estimates, in support of bidding and construction.
  • Review technical reports and recommendations prepared by team members and vet for incorporation into design.
  • Assist with written communications, preparation of graphics, figures and other materials for public/client/team meetings, workshops and charrettes.
  • Participate in client and team meetings.
  • Assist with tracking project progress within established scope, budgets and schedules and alert the project manager(s) and team of issues that may be impactful.
  • Assist with proposal development by conducting research and preparing technical summaries.
  • Communicate project-related, design and client standards knowledge with team members.
  • Travel to rural and urban sites for pre-design assessment, construction and project closeouts.

Travel as necessary for professional education and recruitment opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Must have an EIT certificate or be able to obtain within six months of hire. Prior engineering work experience or internship in the areas of general civil engineering, with an emphasis on airport, site civil and/or surface transportation design is desirable, but not mandatory. Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D is desirable, as well as basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Project. All candidates should have good interpersonal abilities for working in a team environment, strong written and verbal communication skills, and critical thinking skills. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and detail oriented.
