R&M offers significant capabilities in highway, street and road design and construction administration, and has received numerous project awards from the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities on some of the State’s larger highway and urban roadway design and improvement projects. These have included the Seward Highway and the Parks Highway, as well as Tudor Road and the Glenn Highway in Anchorage.
The firm’s first highway design effort was initiated in the spring of 1969, with the location and fast-track design for construction of the initial 56-mile segment of the Dalton Highway, extending from Livengood to the Yukon River. Access to the river was attained by the contractor in late fall of the same year. Since that time, R&M has been involved in numerous rural roadway route studies and design efforts in areas having difficult terrain and complex soil and permafrost conditions.
More recent projects have included the design of 35 miles of improvements for the Parks Highway and design of a difficult 5-mile section of the Seward Highway. Both of these projects involved bridges, roadway relocation, major surveying efforts, and extensive geotechnical studies. The projects were planned and designed in accordance with the standards established by the Federal Highway Administration and DOT&PF.
Highway and roadway planning and design continue to be a well-established specialty at R&M. As a result of our consistent professional performance in this challenging field, R&M has been given a great deal of repeat business from DOT&PF and other public clients, including the Municipality of Anchorage, Project Management & Engineering Department.
